Social Work Services

In order to achieve solid and durable gains at Just Kids Preschool, family involvement is essential. Social workers are members of the child's treatment team and facilitate family involvement and provide a range of services. Social workers can also be chosen by the family as the Service Coordinator for the child in the Early Intervention program. With the goal of supporting the family's utilization of services, the social worker acts as a liaison between the family, community, service providers and treatment team. Social workers provide direct services to the family through outreach in accordance with family identified needs, strengths, goals, priorities, concerns and resources as well as through team recommendations and treatment plan.

The services of the social worker begin upon assignment where a determination of child and family needs/strengths and goals are established. Services are offered in the form of home, office and community visits. Information, education, advocacy, support, counseling and referrals are provided and continue throughout the family's affiliation with Just Kids. The family and social worker, through assessment and intervention, work to identify obstacles which may prevent full utilization of services. The social worker assists the family in transitioning the child to an appropriate setting when they leave Just Kids.

Social workers facilitate and co-lead the parent support and education group that Just Kids sponsors in the program.

Just Kids Parent Support Groups
Just Kids Parent Support Groups
Just Kids has several different group models and workshops designed to meet the needs of the families we serve:

The parent groups are offered primarily at our Middle Island and Lindenhurst sites. At our Riverhead site, there is a parent support group that meets monthly. Parent workshops and special presentations are also offered as announced at all sites. The groups are co-lead by a social worker and a psychologist. Parents continue to give very positive feedback in their individual group evaluations on how much the group has helped them and “how wonderful it is to talk to other parents of special needs children!”

  • Just Kids Autism Support and Education Group (JKAP)- this group meets in 8 week cycles in the fall and in the spring. This group shares information and provides support as it relates to our children with pervasive developmental disorders, their treatment and their impact on our families.

  • Behavior Management Training (BMT)- 8 week training course that also meets in the fall and in the spring. This training provides useful behavior management skills to deal with challenging behavioral issues.

  • The Parent Support Group (PSG)- this group meets weekly and is a forum to discuss concerns about parenting a child who has developmental challenges or difficulties, to discuss family issues and to provide community resources and referrals as needed. The ongoing support groups are open and allow parents to join the groups at anytime.

  • If you have any questions about the groups, please do not hesitate to contact Liz Reynolds, Parent Group Facilitator at 631-924-0008 ext. 267.
